How to change the battery on a Nuvi 300 Series GPS

Q, How to change the battery in a Nuvi 300/310/350/360/370 ?

A, You will need to purchase the battery firstly from say Battery ship is a good place,
E-bay has plenty for sale too
(( only ever buy "new" from E-bay, only buy off seller's with 99%+ positive feedback too, always check that they are veteran seller's too ))
A, Battery ship U.S.A.(click to purchase)
B, Ebay U.S.A.(click to purchase)
C, Ebay U.K.(click to purchase)

Also you will need A nuvi/ipod opening tool

and also a torx screwdriver(5/6mm)
Also ESD kit advisable $20.

Also you will need torx drivers and posy/Philips and pointed or flathead screwdriver, as there is...
2 x small torx screws for holding the Antenna on the GPS (5mm)
2 x large torx screws for holding the main body of the GPS together (6mm)
1 x Philips screw to hold the internal Main board to the body of the GPS (small)
1 x Antenna spring ( pointed or flathead for removal )
1 x Antenna spring housing ( pointed or flathead for removal )

Your fisrt priority as a professional PC Teckie is ESD strap $20, and a work bench area for the job to be done.

Total cost:
Battery $10, opening tool $2, ESD kit $10-$20, Torx drivers $5,
I will assume you have a screwdriver and a posy/philips driver.

(( WARNING )) this is a bit like surgery, ( well OK maybe not as important and life threatening, but it is delicate as surgery ) if you cannot be delicate and don't have plenty patience for the job, I would advise not to do this, as it is very tricky !!!

Firstly you need to remove the Antenna to get to the 2 screws to undo the main compartment, so turn the nuvi round and from the back, under the Antenna you will see 2 small torx screws, undo the 2 screws.

The Antenna is in ((two section's)) with a spring and pin holding it together and holding it to the main GPS unit, slide this to the right with a flat head or pointed screwdriver, ( due care and attention needed here ) once the 2 screws are undone, you will need to slide the pin, from the Antenna and main body of the GPS,

Then you can get to the 2 main screws holding the unit together, once the antenna is off and the 2 screws are out you can move on, be aware that the Antenna comes off very awkward and needs to be twisted out of it's location,

Also note where the antenna wire lives inside the housing of the Antenna case.
(( delicate maneuver's to remove the Antenna and patience needed ))

Then use the opening tool, to pry open the GPS,
(it is advertised as a ipod opening tool) it is a soft spatula type object that is softer than the GPS so it will take the damage rather than damaging the GPS sides, slip the opening tool into the GPS and slide the tool all the way round the GPS until it is partially opened
( all the way round ) then it will open up easy for you, your GPS will not pop open, by just opening the bottom or top edge, you must slide the tool all around then it will open up, but then not fully opening up.

When you open up the GPS be aware that there is an internal PCB, speaker, an LCD screen with connection's and also the battery of course,

When you open up the unit be aware that the ribbon connections to the LCD Screen at one side and the ribbon connection to the Capacitive Touch screen are at the other side, and the Antenna ribbon cable too, if seperated too much the connection's may come apart, so steady past your grandma's here, just open slightly to get to the single screw,

Once opened then you can remove the single internal philips screw that holds the PCB / IC assembly in place, open it up, fold it over to reveal the battery,

The battery is held down by sticky tape, so you will need to first un-clip the power connection to the GPS from the battery
( check, this will only go in one way too ) then release from the tape to remove the battery,

The back case section can be completely removed, by disconnecting the speaker and battery leads from the main unit,

Before closing the unit back up, make sure the battery is connected ( power and is only connected one way round ) and all the ribbon conectors are connected properly, the Antenna wire is properly seated where it should be, use either a camera or a Camera phone to take pictures as you go through this will help you in the re-assembly then.
Good luck and have fun, and go slow as it can take just a fraction of a second to render something un-useable.
